Books, Books, Books!

OK, I'm a big fan of reading. So is the rest of my family. So I think on Tuesdays I'm going to write about books I'm reading, the kids are reading or that I've read. Also - I'm asking that people give some recommendations of books (esp any good adoption ones but books of any kind) that I should read.
Thanks!

To start today I am going to tell you that I think the Magic Tree House books (or the Jack and Annie books, as my kids call them) are fantastic! We've read a lot of them and now in the first and second to last chapter of each book when it says "The wind started to blow, the tree house started to spin. It spun faster and faster. Then everything was still. Absolutely still." our whole household chants this together. It's so fun to listen to the kids say it with great expression! :) Then we all laugh when we're done. Yesterday Brian was nearby when I was reading to them so all 4 of us chanted it together and it filled my heart. :)

I am currently reading a wonderful parenting book called "Bringing up Geeks". It's a great book and I highly recommend it. It's something you can start in toddlerhood (is that a word?) and only becomes more and more wonderful and useful as your kids get older.

Please share any book recommendations. I'd love to hear them!

  1. Bringing Up Geeks--I love the title. It makes me want to read it right now!!!

We have a few favorite children's books with Korean characters: Bee Bim Bop (of course), This Next New Year, The Firekeeper's Son and Dear Juno.

  2. Christy -
I've read many recommendations on "Parenting Your Internationally Adopted Child." I'm going to purchase it this week since we're approaching the end of our journey (I better hurry). It's supposedly one of the best for parents and has a very positive spin. I'll let you know.

  3. I love the Todd Parr books about family, adoption, being different, and even books on peace.
As for personal reading - I love fiction, fiction, and more fiction. Currently I'm reading a not so great Linda Howard romance/mystery - can't wait for it to be done so I can get around to something much better (isn't that sad? normally her books are so good!)
    I'm also a huge reader - guess that's why I became a librarian!

  4. Thanks for the comment on my blog :).
I love going to library sales for great finds. My siblings and I are all avid readers, and growing up my mom would hit the library sales and bring home a box for each of us. We'd read our own, then swap and read our brothers' or sisters'. I buy books at every opportunity now, and love collecting the ones I grew up with - the Happy Hollisters and Bobbsey Twins and all those old books from the '30's - '50's. Good stuff :).

  5. Hi,
This is totally off topic, but I found your blog through Elizabeth @ Romans 8:15. We are also adopting from SK and just got our referral. I just wanted to say hi!

  6. Christy, on adoption books we have:

Successful Adoption: A Guide for Christian Families. Must of this is pre-country decisions but it has a lot of good information in it.

I also look at this site:

I love to read too! I wonder how much reading I will be doing in the future :)
